Artist – Ronald Van der Plight

About The Artist

I am an established artist and a long-time resident of Cairns, North Queensland. My artwork is collected locally and internationally and I consider my style to be contemporary expressionist art. I paint from the heart and my interpretive work is influenced by my diverse and cosmopolitan lifestyle, and my surroundings amidst the colours and textures of North Queensland. My paintings have been described as reminiscent of the contemporary artists of Europe.

Educated in Melbourne, I excelled in my favoured subject – art – sowing the seeds of a style that has evolved to encompass both classic and modern influences. Leaving school at 17, I pursued a part-time course in Art Practice at Caulfield Technical College, further honing my skills and personal development as an artist.

I relocated to Europe in 1970, basing myself in Amsterdam for two and a half years and immersing in my Dutch heritage. I travelled extensively, visiting every prestigious gallery in Europe and absorbing inspiration from the contemporary artists of the 1970’s, as well as the old masters and classics.

After a second extended stint in Europe, in 1978 I returned to Australia to settle and I opened a gallery on Sydney’s lower north shore, which I successfully operated for 11 years. The gallery exhibited and sold my own work as well as providing a platform for other emerging artists of Sydney.

I found a niche in the area of corporate décor and enjoyed success with my innovative concept of leasing work on a rotating basis to match the décor of offices and hotel foyers, as well as selling many pieces outright.

In 1988 I established a business providing unique display themes for corporate and product launches, including painted backdrops, set props and ‘papier mache’ design works.

Over the past four years, I have nurtured my interest in contemporary aboriginal art – from which I draw great inspiration for my own work – and have become a respected local authority in the genre. Less

A member of the Cairns Art Society, I regularly exhibit my work in community art exhibitions in the region.
